Often, too often, Politicians will use rhetoric in their campaign speeches such as “Washington is Broken”, “we need to change the way Washington works”, “we have to end the “Business as usual mentality in Washington””, “we have to end the Status Quo”. Don’t elect the other guy elect me because He’s part of the Problem and I have solutions. “I know how to fix Washington, elect me and I’ll change how Washington works”. When you vote for that candidate and he goes to Washington do you find yourself asking “what happened he said he would change things” and nothing in Washington changes?
The politicians have to work within the system if they want to get anything done which means they have to work within the rules that have been followed for decades and the politicians established. Even if they go in with the best of intentions they soon get schooled in “How things Work in Washington” and if they want to be effective they have to play the game. Even before they get elected they are already expected to pick a side so they can get the Democrats support or the Republicans support. Without the support of the R’s or D’s its very difficult to get elected as an independent although it does happen occasionally. Even if you get elected as an independent you are expected to take sides in Congress. All bills are written from a left or right viewpoint, whichever party is in control at the time, and you have to choose which side you’re on for that bill.
It has been this way since the Democratic Republican party was formed by Thomas Jefferson and the Republican Party came later in 1854 creating the two major political parties in America. Once in awhile a party will try to emerge to challenge the monopoly the Republicans and Democrats have over our political system but they usually fail. The two party system is the Status quo and both sides fight feverishly to maintain it because it works for the Politicians.
Whichever party happens to be in control at the time, it’s their agenda that’s pushed, and the other party is relegated to being the opposition party. The minority party, although it’s expected to be in opposition of the ruling party, is expected to capitulate to the majority party and compromise. When the controlling party loses control the other party pushes its agenda. Each time a party gains control it blames the party that was in control previously for the problems. They are able to keep the division, and maintain the Status Quo in Politics and within the country by maintaining the illusion that the two party system maintains a balance in Politics by opposing each other.
Our electoral process is set up to maintain the Status Quo. When you register to vote you are expected to indicate whether you’re an R, D, Independent, etc… When primaries are held to select the candidates that will be running in the election you can only vote in the primaries based on your indicated party affiliation. Democrats select the candidate that they feel represents Democratic points of view and the same with Republicans. Since Democrats are trying to beat out other Democrats and the same for the Republicans, the candidates are trying to show they are the Most Democratic in their views and the same with Republicans. So now you have two candidates running against each other with the most extreme opposing view points and ideologies. In the General election you’re expected to choose one side or the other.
Keeping the Country Separated into a two party system and having the two sides at each others throat is the Status quo. Maybe American Citizens like the Status quo and how things work in Washington. It seems to me American Citizens are working awfully hard to maintain it. Look at the articles, comments, seeds, websites, etc… written and created by American Citizens. American Citizens constantly choosing sides and trying to prove their side is right and the other side is wrong. Look at all the articles from both sides trying to vilify, ridicule, condemn and invalidate and marginalize the other side. It’s gotten to the point that both sides call each other names, create false accusations, call each other extremists, anti American, Socialists, Fascists, etc…,etc… creating more animosity and division.
It’s great to be a Politician in America. Each side blames the other so neither side has to take responsibility and the American People don’t hold both parties accountable so the Status Quo is maintained. With the American people choosing up sides and going after each other constantly the Politicians have carte blanche to do whatever they want. The Politicians have no fear of the American people uniting in a common cause to fix Washington and fix our political system. The people are divided and let their political ideology close their ears to what the other side is trying to say.
If what I have said makes sense and you believe I have correctly defined the root cause of the problem with American Politics then you have some thinking to do and a decision to make. Do you continue to let the Politicians keep the American People divided and maintain the Status Quo, or unite in a common cause to fix our political system?
Until the Political system itself is fixed nothing will change. The politicians aren’t going to fix the political system because it works for them not “We the People”. What’s that old saying, “If you’re not part of the solution then your part of the problem”.
If you’ve decided you’ve had enough then you’ll read the Second part of this article “Maintaining the Status Quo in Washington D.C. and how American Citizens are doing their part. Part 2; A Solution
